The Community Action Organization of Erie County, Inc. will host the official grand opening of its newest Head Start Center inside the historic St. Agatha’s Roman Catholic Church. The ceremonial ribbon-cutting will take place on Thursday, November 15, 2007 from 11am – 12pm at the church, located at 65 Abbott Road in South Buffalo.
Children from the Sankofa Theatre Company and Sankofa Drummers will perform alongside spoken word poet, Lonnie Harrell. A City of Buffalo proclamation will also be presented to the CAO Head Start program by South District Councilmember Michael Kearns.
Head Start is the most successful, longest-running, national school readiness program in the United States and was created in 1965 to provide comprehensive education, health, nutrition and parent involvement services for low-income children and their families.
Presently, the CAO’s Head Start program services 2,100 children ages zero to five, and covers the entire county - Derby, Blasdell, Gowanda, Holland, Springville, Lackawanna, Akron, Tonawanda, Bowmansville, Amherst, Cheektowaga and Depew. The majority of its sites are located in the City of Buffalo and its classrooms and administrative offices are located in thirty-eight (38) individual sites.

The Community Action Organization of Erie County, Inc. is a private, non-profit human service organization founded in 1965 and its mission is to promote self-sufficiency through advocacy, partnerships and services. Each year, the CAO helps more than 21,000 individuals and 9,000 families gain access to programs or services through a network of more than 50 locations throughout Erie County.
