The Dubai Civil Defence said an average of over 52 fires occurred from February to August this year, representing a 17 per cent increase over that of last year. Most fires were in high rise buildings and buildings under construction.

This alarming development highlights the importance of raising awareness on fire safety. Helping create this awareness is the international exhibition, Intersec Middle East, which will be held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from January 13 to 15, 2008.

“The frequent incidence of fires in the UAE such as the high rise fires in Sharjah and recent fire in Dubai which resulted in numerous fatalities, spotlights the need to raise awareness on the subject of fire prevention and safety,” said Angela Schierholz, Senior Show Manager at Epoc Messe Frankfurt GmbH, organizer of Intersec Middle East. “The Intersec Middle East exhibition over the years has not only raised awareness on fire safety in the Middle East but exposed the relevant authorities to the latest trends in fire fighting and rescue technique and methodology. The number of lives saved as a result of this increased competency cannot be overemphasized,” she said.

Running concurrently with the exhibition will be dedicated Fire, Police and Safety and Health conferences, where police, health and safety departments, fire departments and fire safety officials as well as Civil Defence departments from the Gulf and Middle East region and around the world will converge.
Intersec Middle East is the biggest trade show and conference of its kind in the region and has been providing an information and buying platform for governments, Civil Defence forces, the construction industry, industrial development, commercial businesses, ports, airports and security professionals for ten years now.

Intersec Middle East enjoys the ongoing support of numerous trade and government organizations namely Dubai Police, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Build Safe Dubai, and Dubai Civil Defence which, after a spectacular premiere in 2007, will again demonstrate their state-of-the-art fire fighting and rescue capabilities at Intersec 2008 in Dubai.

The international importance of the Middle East’s biggest show and conference for these industries is emphasized by a steady increase in the numbers of exhibitors, visitors, space and overall international attendance. Intersec Middle East in 2008 will also be host to 13 country presentations from Germany, France, China, Pakistan, Austria, the UK, the USA, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Italy, Scandinavia, Taiwan and Canada.
