Unify Corp. (OTCBB: UFYC), a global provider of application modernization software, today announced that Kevin Kane, vice president and general manager of the Composer Solutions division will be featured in an Enterprise Systems Journal Podcast that addresses the increased need for application modernization.
During the Podcast, Kane is interviewed by Jim Powell, editorial director, Enterprise Systems Journal and discusses the business drivers for application modernization. Kane explains that across all industry sectors IT departments are attempting to reduce costs while providing a significant service back to the business. In order to accomplish these objectives companies are: standardizing applications to ensure interoperability; optimizing their IT environments; and benefiting from new products that come from third party innovators.
The opportunity to standardize, consolidate and reduce the costs associated with supporting legacy platforms by modernizing applications has become a high priority with Fortune 500 companies. Today, scores of enterprise organizations continue to have thousands of software applications written in Lotus Notes. Many companies and government agencies have mandated that applications written years ago using Lotus Notes must be modernized because of the proprietary nature of Notes and the dwindling number of Lotus Notes developers available to maintain the applications.
In order to modernize legacy Lotus Notes applications, companies must choose to either replace the applications with commercial-off-the-shelf solutions; retire the applications altogether; rewrite the applications; or migrate the applications to modern platforms such as Java and Microsoft SharePoint and .NET. Retiring applications is the least challenging, however, it is only done when the data and application no longer has business value. Replacing applications with commercial-off-the-shelf software often requires heavy customization and integration. Rewriting applications is expensive, time consuming and risk intensive due to the arduous process of obtaining user acceptance for new business logic, workflow, user interface requirements and final testing. By comparison, migrating applications is less expensive, represents less risk, and requires less time and resources, while minimizing the disruption for both the IT staff and end user community as the application’s user interface remains similar.
To address the needs of the market, Unify offers a solution called Composer for Lotus Notes - Microsoft Edition, which is a service that delivers production-to-production migration of Lotus Notes applications to the Microsoft platform. Data from the Lotus Notes application is migrated into a normalized SQL Server database, all business logic is restructured as C# Web services in Visual Studio, the user interface is transformed into SharePoint Lists, Web Parts or ASP.NET applications and the ACL security is mapped into Microsoft Active Directory Services.
