Edna Mitchell is reaching out to thank the people who joined her efforts to help a family of four orphaned children and their grandmother. Ms. Mitchell plans to meet with the Mayor of her hometown of Gardner, Kansas in January when she will present her homemade quilt, signed by those who helped her, to Mayor Carol Lehman.
Many of those signatures are from employees at Peachtree Settlement Funding in Boca Raton, Florida. Peachtree management sent money to Ms. Mitchell while employees donated shoes, jackets and clothing for all four children.
Edna, like many people, watched the devastation of Hurricane Katrina on the news in disbelief. However, unlike most people, she got in her car and drove from her home in Gardner, Kansas to Houston, Texas where thousands of evacuees from New Orleans were relocated.
When Edna arrived at the Houston Astrodome, she met Mary Griffin and her four grandchildren. The children’s mother (who was a single parent) drowned during Katrina, leaving their grandmother as their sole provider.
Edna and Mary immediately connected. The four orphaned children (Orlando, Christina, Damon and Joventea) and their Grandmother escaped New Orleans with just the clothes on their backs and little else.
Peachtree’s Director of Structured Settlements, Deborah Benaim, said, “We worked with Edna in the past and knew she was a kind person with a big heart. When we heard about her efforts to rescue this family, I felt Peachtree should help.” Peachtree responded to Edna’s plea with a check and a collection of children’s clothing.
Mary Thompson, a Peachtree Account Executive, coordinated employee efforts to help Edna and the children. “When Edna called me and I heard their story, I told my co-workers about these heartbroken children. Edna didn’t have much, but what she did have she was willing to share with the Griffin family.”
Peachtree Settlement Funding has adopted several families impacted by Hurricane Katrina and will continue to do so through the holidays and as long as they need the helping hand.
