Bradenton, FL, United States, 2007/10/22 - Manufacturer starts to use Melamine board with no urea-formaldehyde added in all closets, pantries, offices and murphybed designs. It is now possible to organize a closet and protect the environment at the same time.
You might say that on a grand scale one of the issues facing our planet is clutter. Too much waste and junk filling up our landfills. On a somewhat smaller scale, who among us doesn’t feel they have too much clutter in the home? And could use more functional closets to deal with it? Form and Function Custom Closets, Inc.of Bradenton Florida announced today that it has introduced a line of custom closet shelving and organizing products designed to tackle both issues. The company has developed a unique line of environmentally friendly shelving and design products for closets, pantries, garages, offices -anyplace more organized space is needed.
Since 1997 Form and Function Custom Closets has been evolving and upgrading a unique and innovative custom closet system for the design, building and architectural community.
This year in 2007 Founder and CEE of the company, Volkhard Neumann, saw the need to take the company green. Says Volkhard, “There is a growing trend in the architectural and design industry to be concerned about green building techniques. This means not only using building materials that are more sustainable, but that pose no health hazards to people and to the environment around them.” The company is a member of the U.S.Green Building Council (USGBC), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting buildings that are environmentally responsible and healthy places to live and work.
Form and Function Custom Closets uses Melamine-board in their closet and shelving system. Volkhard chose Melamine-board because of it’s many unique characteristics. Melamine is strong, durable, will not warp, it is aesthetically pleasing and can be cleaned up easily with only a damp cloth. The only problem is most Melamine, like many other composite wood building materials such as plywood and pressboard, uses a resin or glue containing urea-formaldehyde (UF). The EPA has determined that the use of UF adhesives in these composite wood products can be a significant source of formaldehyde in the home. Formaldehyde has been classified as a known carcinogen. Long-term inhalation of formaldehyde vapors has been linked to a variety of health problems including fatigue, respiratory irritation, impaired lung function, and allergic skin reactions. Says Volkhard “This problem of off-gassing from formaldehyde resins is even more acute in a hot and humid environment like we have here in Florida.” The chemical can also find it’s way into the groundwater as discarded wood composites using UF wind up in landfills.
Form and Function Custom Closets, Inc. is the first and only closet system manufacturer to use only Formaldehyde-Free (no formaldehyde added) Melamine board. Says Volkhard; “Yes this raises the cost of our most important raw material. But at the end of the day we are creating a little bit of a better world for our clients, it may be just in their closets, but someone has to start somewhere.”
