"The LGBT Community cannot be silent on any matters of injustice."
Bishop Zachary Jones, Unity Fellowship Church Movement's chief spokesperson for Archbishop Carl Bean and the House of Bishops, speaks out vehemently against the "miscarriage of justice and just thinking that is parading through the streets of Jena, Louisiana." The Bishop, who has addressed concerned social justice thinkers and clergy from New York City to Israel, determined that it was time that more voices be heard in the travesty that is unfolding in the small southern town.
"From the beginning, the story of the Jena 6 should have resounded from every radio show, television program and media outlet in this country. In this era of Columbine and Virginia Tech, school-based violence cannot be ignored. But as much as focus is being turned to the actions of the young men who fought, the act of hanging nooses from trees and utilizing power to intimidate reeks of a greater concern." The Jena 6 Case, which in part, a tale of schoolyard violence gone awry, after young black students were "threatened" with nooses after sitting under a "white tree" one day. Subsequent conversations included the District Attorney informing the youth that he could "destroy" their lives with his pen. "We, the LGBT Community, the African-American community, the Social Justice community, must all rally around this case, because if these young people are railroaded through injustice, we will send a message that will sting for generations to come. The precedents that would be set and the message that would be sent to our young people if these men are tried and convicted for essentially defending their honor, will stagnant the progresses against racism and classism immeasurably."
The issue of homophobia makes its way to the forefront in the case of Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) whose on-again, off-again case of "lewd and lascivious conduct" continues to highlight the imbalance in the judiciary system. "To date, Senator Craig has vowed to stay in office if he can get his guilty plea overturned. He is utilizing his position, which is very much the opposite of racism and classism, to hopefully portray himself as the antithesis of a homosexual man, thus invoking the most disturbing factor of injustice—privilege. We will be diligent in watching this case, insuring that the Senator doesn't attempt to engage in a homophobic defense of his actions or the perceptions thereof."
Through an emerging international network, UFCM works to facilitate social change and improve the life chances for those who have been rejected by society's institutions and systems. Although its pivotal work focuses on the urban weak and powerless, the scope of its work is inclusive and has significance for all people.
