Bit9, Inc. today introduced Version 4.0 of its award-winning Parity™ application and device control solution. As part of the new functionality, customers will now benefit from enhanced automatic whitelisting of trusted software and devices.
Bit9 Parity provides the easiest and most effective way for IT to achieve business-friendly Windows security by controlling which applications and devices can and cannot operate. In doing so, Bit9 Parity prevents malicious software and data leakage while ensuring the highest levels of compliance, security, and manageability.
“IT organizations need the appropriate balance to help manage and control security on desktops and servers,” said Mark Bowker, analyst at noted research firm Enterprise Strategy Group. “Blacklists keep growing infinitely to keep pace with massive amounts of malware and crimeware and they are vulnerable against zero-day attacks. Whitelisting technology from companies such as Bit9 has the potential of easing the operational burden of managing desktops while protecting them at the same time.”
As part of Bit9 Parity Version 4.0, available now, customers will be able to take advantage of the following features:
• Enhanced Automatic Software Whitelisting
Bit9’s automatic software whitelisting functionality now includes:
– Trusted Processes (software deployment, patching, and updating)
– Trusted Locations (repositories, shares, websites, and intranets)
– Trusted Users (end users, administrators, and delegates)
– Trusted Applications (applications, installers, vendors, drivers, and run-time)
Using this functionality, configuration drift is reduced, even as applications are deployed, updated, or patched over time. Exceptions to corporate and security policies are minimized upfront without active IT involvement.
• Granular Device Whitelisting
This feature restricts portable storage device usage to an authorized set of trusted devices and trusted users (for example, allowing only encrypted devices) and prevents the unauthorized transfer of data to a removable media device.
• Simulation of Policy Enforcement
Before IT staff control the software in their environment with Bit9, they can test the results of the policy to determine what effect it will have on users. This enables them to refine the policy to eliminate forgotten applications and reduce other exceptions, thereby minimizing the impact of transitioning users to a more controlled environment.
• Flexible Active Directory Integration
Customers can enforce policy by computer or by user through Active Directory Groups – and view that information directly in the Parity Console. This helps not only to manage users and policies, but also to maintain consistency between policy engines.
• The World’s Largest Knowledgebase of Actionable Intelligence
Parity 4.0 integrates with the world’s largest knowledgebase of metadata about commercial applications, open-source software, drivers, libraries, and malware, currently comprising more than 4 billion files and growing by up to 50 million records a day. This software identification service helps users understand what is on their desktops and accurately assess threat levels and trust factors. Parity Version 4.0 features new file metadata along with the vendor, product, and identity of files, as well as the results of more than two dozen separate malware and vulnerability scans and vulnerability reports.
“New technology pioneered by Bit9 makes whitelisting of trusted software and devices an automatic process, enabling customers to define which applications and devices are allowed to operate,” said Tom Murphy, Bit9’s Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President of Products and Services. “Customers who need to easily and effectively manage their desktops are rapidly turning to whitelisting as part of their defense-in-depth strategy -- and Bit9 makes it simple.”
“Bit9 is helping to protect Ritz’s kiosk-based image-processing environment against data leakage and unauthorized software,” said Bob O’Hern, Vice President, Information Systems, Ritz Camera Centers. “In the past, these kiosks were vulnerable to non-business applications; now with Bit9, they run a standard image.”
