The 12-acre (five hectare) site is known locally as the Serpentine includes the derelict Aston Tavern as well as Aston Events Centre.
The land, bordered by Serpentine Road and Aston Hall Road, was previously the site of an Asda superstore which has now been cleared.
Advantage West Midlands (advantagewm.co.uk) has now taken ownership of the site and will be working with partners and to draw up plans for its future use based around the needs of the Aston community.
The emerging Aston, Newtown and Lozells Action Plan earmarks the Serpentine site for leisure, cultural and mixed use and although detail is yet to be finalised, the final use for the site will incorporate these elements.
Mick Laverty, Advantage West Midlands Deputy Chief Executive, said: “One of the major barriers to regeneration in Aston has been the absence of any major development sites which could act as a catalyst for the rest of the community.
“This is a key piece of land in the middle of one of the neediest communities Birmingham and it was vital we stepped in to make sure it is used productively.
“Had this site been sold off for housing or retail, it would not have had any real benefit for the community.
“These are early days and it is important we don’t rush the development of this land.
“While in the short-term the site will remain as it is, having it in public ownership gives us a golden opportunity to plan a development which will make a difference to the future prosperity of the Aston community.
“Over the coming months we will work with partners such as Aston Pride and Birmingham City Council, as well as the local community to assess the long-term needs for the area.
“We will then work towards securing private sector involvement and developing the right regeneration scheme for Aston.”
