Provo, UT, United States, 2007/08/13 - Hypothetically, if you could re-live the past 10 years, would you be in the same job as you are today? One in two survey respondents said “no.” Qualtrics surveyed a nationwide panel to discover America’s overall level of job satisfaction.

The recent survey — performed by market research industry leader Qualtrics — shows that 55 percent of Americans feel they are not adequately recognized for the job they do within their occupation. Moreover, 37 percent of respondents who work for an employer feel they are better suited for their boss’s job than their boss is.
“It’s interesting that more than half of America’s working class reports inadequate appreciation for their jobs, and more than half would also choose a different job if they could do it again,” says Ryan Smith, Qualtrics Director. “But despite this apparent dissatisfaction, very few respondents would take a pay cut for a more satisfying job — that was the most surprising statistic to me.”
The figure Smith mentions is that 74 percent of those surveyed suggested they would not be willing to take a pay decrease in exchange for a more satisfying work experience.
The Qualtrics survey helps to add significant data results the widespread interest in pay as a function of job satisfaction. A recent About.com online poll showed that 21 percent of respondents feel “the amount of money I make,” gives them the most job satisfaction, with 30 percent answering “respect from my boss,” and 49 percent responding, “I love what I do.”
“Polls have discovered that compensation is a major factor of job satisfaction,” Smith says. “But we wanted to find out which single variable people value more, overall job satisfaction or pay. Personally, I predicted the results leaning the other way, but that’s why it’s important to conduct research — our predictions are very often dead wrong.”
