With over 300 miles of designated ATV trails, the Jackman Moose River Region is quickly becoming an ATVer’s vacation destination in Maine. ATV riders visiting Jackman Maine have the option to not only ride south to the Forks, east toward Rockwood but now, they can go even further North into Quebec. Now, thanks to the efforts of the Jackman Border Riders Club, the Quebec ATV club and landowners of the area, riders can cross the border into Canada and enjoy additional miles of trails to St Come Quebec.
"ATVer's account for a large percentage of visitors to the Jackman Maine Moose River Region every year and we expect connecting these two trail systems will attract even more visitors to the area." said Ray Levesque, President of the Jackman Moose River Region Chamber of Commerce.
After working together for three years on opening the trail, the two clubs plan to celebrate the completion of the Canadian ATV trail to the Jackman Maine border on July 21st, 2007 with an ATV Rendez-vous.
This inaugural ride will be an organized event in which participants on both sides of the border will leave their clubhouse at the same time and meet up on the trail. Quebec club members will lunch in the US and the US members will lunch at the clubhouse in St Come, Zac Zero. The fee for US citizens for lunch is $19.00 and they will have a free pass to cross the border for this day only.
"This will put Jackman Maine's ATV trails on the map as it brings a unique ATV riding experience of a multi-country ride" said Dave Jones, Trail Master of the Jackman Maine Border Riders Club.
The trails in the region are at least 8 feet wide and can be accessed from most accommodations in the region as well as from stores, restaurants and gas stations. They are mostly made up of old winter or logging roads and some are cut-throughs but provide the opportunity to go full throttle” or cruise” to enjoy the scenery and the wildlife. A favorite trail of many ATV riders is the North Loop and Dave’s Loop which can take you up to scenic views.
The Border Riders Club and its members have worked hard with landowners in the area to develop safe riding conditions while maintaining the environmental protection required by the state. There are no extreme trails and they are safe for children to ride with their parents.
Some helpful information if you plan to ride into Canada:
• You must obtain a pass to ride on the Canadian ATV trail before getting to the border. Currently, these will be available for you at Jackman Powersports and at Bishops Store in Jackman. Day, Seasonal, and Yearly passes are available.
• For 2007 you will need a valid driver's license, proof of insurance and registration to cross the border.
• Canada's definition of an ATV does not include anything with a steering wheel (ie: Prowlers, Rangers). However, for the ATV Rendezvous, an exception has been made.
• Dirt bikes are not permitted on the ATV trails in Canada.
• All ATV's must have a mirror and helmets are mandatory.
