IBD Insurance, a Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) agency, has published a white paper of interest to small business owners, freelancers, and other self employed individuals documenting several little known ways to obtain affordable health insurance.
According to national statistics, 60% of individuals without health insurance have full time jobs, many of which are in business for themselves.
“We experienced an increased demand for personal health insurance policies after several of the technology companies in North Carolina laid off large percentages of their workforce and many decided to go into business for themselves. Most said that they were surprised at the number of affordable options for the self employed,” says Andrea Hunnicutt Grater of IBD Insurance.
Issues around affordable health care have proven a primary concern for small businesses throughout the country. Commenting on a recent survey by NFIB, William Dennis, senior research fellow, NFIB Research Foundation says “Once again small-business owners overwhelmingly voiced the need for Congress to address ever-rising health insurance costs.” An earlier survey by the organization shows that health care is the top concern for businesses of all sizes.
Grater says that many small business owners and entrepreneurs that she speaks with are unaware of some of the more creative ways that small business owners can secure affordable health insurance. “Most have done quotes online for traditional personal health care plans and have either been denied, shocked by the cost, or both – but there are other alternatives that most people are not aware of,” says Grater.
IBD says that it published the whitepaper as a way to inform the self employed about some of the lesser known options in health care coverage such as HSA’s (Healthcare Spending Accounts), benefits carving, and group plans are viable alternatives to traditional plans. “Even single person ventures can incorporate their businesses and obtain group coverage as a means of obtaining more affordable insurance,” says Grater.
