Britain’s 54 million mobile phone users are increasingly confused by their phone package – with an astonishing one thousand YEARS of paid-for ‘free talk time’ being wasted across the UK every month, according to new research issued today (Monday).

In fact around three quarters of UK mobile users either don’t make enough calls to justify their monthly phone bill, or regularly go over their monthly minute allowance – resulting in nine out of ten people feeling short-changed by their phone contract.

The research - conducted by new mobile phone service provider Noodle, which today launches the UK’s newest pay-as-you-use phone service - shows that a total of 1,712 years, or 900 million minutes, worth of ‘free talk time’ are paid for but not used each month. The findings also reveal:

Nine out of ten people in the UK use a mobile phone, with around 55 per cent using a pay-as-you-go mobile, and the rest contracted to a mobile phone operator.

Users who exceed their monthly allowance are collectively charged an additional £50million each month by phone operators…at a rate much higher than that included within their call plan.

Approximately 14 million phone users are, on average, needlessly paying for 64 minutes of talk time they never use every month.

Almost one in six (13%) contract holders regularly exceed their monthly minute allowance…overspending by an average of £16 each month – as much as £192 each year.

Sean Murray, chief executive of Noodle, said: “If William the Conqueror had made a mobile phone call in 1066 to say he’d just won the Battle of Hastings, and he’d been on the phone ever since, then you get an idea of how many ‘free minutes’ are wasted in the UK every month – yet people continue to pay for them."

The new Noodle SIM is the UK’s newest pay-as-you-use phone service, which only charges for the calls made. From just £4.95 a month and 6 pence per minute - a fraction of the price of many other providers - people can use their Noodle mobile and earn up to 2 pence per minute cash-back for receiving calls – no complicated tariffs, just straightforward pricing.

Sean Murray, chief executive of Noodle, added: “Users often enter into contracts which stipulate how long they can spend on their phone each month, and as a result are forced to pay a premium for basic services that, in reality, don’t actually cost that much.

“Our research clearly shows that people aren’t making the most of their mobile phone contracts. Noodle is bringing things back to basics. No paying for calls you never make, no 18 month contracts – just a low cost service with no catches.”

In addition to the new low-cost Noodle Mobile contract, Noodle (noodle.co.uk) has also launched Noodle Oodles, a new service allowing phone users currently contracted to other network providers to get some of their money back.
