• Slovenia Control has selected Thales to supply an additional co-mounted primary radar, STAR NG, and secondary surveillance radar, RSM NG, as part of the enhancement of air traffic surveillance capabilities within Slovenian airspace.
• Leveraging more than 50 years of air traffic control and surveillance expertise, Thales’ en-route and approach radars are renowned for outstanding reliability, unmatched performance and the latest in digital innovations. Today, Thales supports the world’s largest installed radar base, with more than 1,200 systems delivered across 100+ countries.
• Thales has maintained a strong presence in Slovenia for nearly three decades, providing a wide range of advanced Air Traffic Management equipment to support the country’s aviation infrastructure.

With air traffic in Europe steadily rising, the new radar system will provide redundant, continuous surveillance coverage within Slovenian airspace, monitoring both cooperative and non-cooperative aircraft to further enhance operational safety, security and efficiency.

Thales will deliver the co-mounted radar system, including a 30-metre tower and a protective radome, to ensure reliable operation even in harsh weather conditions, by mid-2027. Equipped with Thales’ next-generation approach radars, STAR NG and RSM NG, the system will provide continuous 24/7 air surveillance, enhancing operational capabilities and detection performance. This upgrade will ensure full compliance with national and European aviation regulations.

STAR NG is a scalable S-Band Primary Surveillance Radar designed for Approach Control, capable of providing surveillance coverage up to 80 nautical miles. It can support a wide range of civil and military air traffic surveillance applications, including airports and air base environments. Complementing this, RSM NG acts as a multi-functional sensor, delivering simultaneous Mode S interrogations and ADS-B extended squitter in a single system.

All of Thales’ air traffic control radars are cybersecure by design and adhere to the latest EUROCONTROL and ICAO recommendations. They fully comply with European Mode S Station (EMS) standards, ensuring that safety, interoperability, and technological reliability remain at the highest level.

Slovenia Control’s mission is to provide safe, efficient, and reliable air navigation services across Slovenian airspace, ensuring the orderly flow of air traffic for both civil and military users. Thales has supported this mission for nearly 30 years, with a range of Air Traffic Management solutions, including radars, ADS-B, WAM, ILS, and more recently the upgrade of AMHS systems.

“We are honoured that Slovenia Control has once again placed its trust in Thales with the order of this new co-mounted air traffic control radar. This contract reflects not only our commitment to delivering advanced radar surveillance solutions, but also the strength of our long-standing partnership in ensuring safe and efficient air operations across Europe.”
Lionel de Castellane, Vice President of Thales’ Air Traffic Control radars segment.

“We are pleased to take this important step forward together with our partner Thales, with whom we share a common goal: safe, efficient and modern air traffic management. This cooperation further strengthens our commitment to continuously enhancing the safety and performance of air navigation services in Slovenia and beyond.” Rok Marolt, CEO of Slovenia Control, Ltd.

This contract represents a major milestone in Slovenia’s efforts to modernise its aviation infrastructure, reinforcing the country’s dedication to safety, innovation, and sustainable growth in the civil aviation sector.
