ANDRITZ is part of a consortium led by Elecnor for these projects. Synchronous condensers play a key role in enabling the energy transition by providing grid stability as the share of volatile renewable energy increases.
The four contracts were awarded under the local Low Carbon Inertia Services (LCIS) program. Launched by EirGrid and SONI, the transmission system operators responsible for operating Ireland’s and Northern Ireland’s electricity grids, this program is an important step toward reducing dependence on fossil power generation. By enabling greater integration of renewables, it will make a significant contribution to the region’s renewable energy targets for 2030.
ANDRITZ will supply state-of-the-art synchronous condensers for the substations in Glencloosagh (250 MVA), Quarry Lane (250 MVA), Coolkeeragh (250 MVA), and Coleraine (110 MVA) on a turnkey basis, providing synchronous inertia, reactive power support, and short-circuit contribution to strengthen grid stability. In addition, ANDRITZ has been awarded long-term maintenance contracts for all four projects. The contracts include the implementation of ANDRITZ’s digital Metris DiOMera platform to ensure safe, predictive, and efficient maintenance.

The projects are scheduled for completion by 2027. The orders have been included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first two quarters of 2025. The order values will not be disclosed.
