Ooma, Inc., a provider of advanced communications services for businesses and consumers, today announced new remote management features for Ooma AirDial®, a leading solution for POTS replacement, that help large organizations manage thousands of lines across hundreds of locations.
Plain Old Telephone Service, or POTS, is being phased out across North America, creating a challenge for organizations of all sizes that rely on analog copper-wire lines for mission-critical devices such as fire alarm panels, elevator emergency phones, building entry systems, fax machines and more. For reliability and regulatory reasons, standard VoIP lines are generally not an appropriate substitute.
Ooma AirDial is a turnkey POTS replacement solution combining hardware, software and service from a single vendor. AirDial’s Remote Device Management (RDM) online portal accelerates the set-up process and makes it possible to track AirDial lines in multiple locations without requiring support staff to go on-site.
New RDM features designed for large POTS replacement projects, whether managed directly by organizations or by their IT partners, include:
• Single Sign On (SSO). Partners and customers can now enable authentication through a preferred Identity Provider (IdP), eliminating the need to maintain separate RDM credentials.
• Bulk Add Devices. Administrators can activate and configure multiple devices at once by uploading a CSV file with device details.
• Expiring Access to RDM. Administrators can now create accounts that are only active for a limited period of time. This can be useful for inviting third-party technicians to use RDM during an installation.
• Number Porting Status. The porting tab in RDM now shows the status of requested porting orders, including the request date, proposed port date, and confirmed date of port completion.
• Mobile Optimization. RDM has been further optimized for mobile access for smoother and more efficient usage on smartphones and tablets. This is especially helpful for field technicians who often don’t carry a laptop.
Existing features that are particularly relevant to large organizations include:
• Parent/Child Accounts. Administrators managing multiple locations, or IT consultants managing multiple customers, can add or delete parent and child accounts across multiple devices, making it easier to oversee large AirDial deployments.
• Call Alerts. Administrators can select recipients to get either SMS or email alerts when a call is placed on a line connected through AirDial. For example, when an emergency call is made from an elevator phone at a hotel, alerts can go to the front desk, the maintenance staff and the property manager.
• Insights View. With one click on an icon in the RDM portal, administrators can see a single screen summarizing the status of all the AirDial units they manage.
• API Integration. Network managers can streamline workflows by passing AirDial status information and notifications into any monitoring tool that supports REST-based APIs. These integrations increase efficiency by combining AirDial monitoring with existing workflows in Network Operating Centers (NOCs).
• Roles-Based Access. There are six levels of RDM access: owner, administrator, user, editor, caller and viewer. Only owners and administrators, for example, can add and remove users. This gives organizations flexibility in making RDM widely accessible without the risk of unintended changes.
