Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd (THPC), a Toshiba Group company based in Hangzhou, China, has completed the delivery and installation of hydropower generation equipment at the Ninghai Pumped-Storage Power Plant in Zhejiang, China. The plant, operated by State Grid Xinyuan Co. Ltd (SGXY), a major state-owned company active in power transmission and distribution and renewable energy, is now fully operational.
THPC has integrated capabilities in the design, manufacture, sales and marketing and maintenance of hydroelectric power equipment. It has supplied the Ninghai plant with four 350MW hydro turbines and related balance-of-plant (BOP) systems, making it the second pumped-storage power plant in China to operate with equipment from Toshiba Group, following the Qingyuan Pumped Storage Power Station in 2016. The plant was completed on schedule, three years after installation began, with Toshiba’s equipment supply contributing to the fastest commissioning timeline among pumped-storage power plants operated by SGXY.
Pumped-storage power generation that stores energy by pumping water to a higher elevation during periods of low electricity demand and releasing it to generate power during peak demand. Among hydropower generation methods, it is particularly effective for balancing supply and demand fluctuations in the grid. Toshiba Group has delivered more than 80 pumped-storage turbines and over 70 generators around the world.
THPC, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, relocated to a new facility in December 2024. Designed to the concept of “Digital × Smart,” it incorporates cutting-edge technologies that shorten manufacturing lead times and reduce costs.
China’s economy continues to grow, and so too does urbanization, driving demand for power. The government, committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, is responding by promoting the introduction of environmentally friendly renewable energy sources. Pumped-storage power generation is growing particularly fast, as it provides the load-balancing capabilities needed to handle increasing use of renewables and their integration into the grid. Figures from China’s National Energy Administration show an installed pumped-storage capacity of approximately 58 GW at the end of 2024, which is expected to grow to 120 GW by 2030.
