Shiseido Company, Limited (Shiseido) has migrated its on-premises global sales and customer analytics systems to Oracle Exadata Database Service and Oracle Analytics Cloud on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). With OCI, Shiseido has been able to reduce its operating costs by approximately 20 percent and optimize its total cost of ownership (TCO) over a five-year period.

Founded in 1872, Shiseido is the eighth largest cosmetics company in the world and offers beauty products in skincare, suncare, and makeup. To help modernize its customer analytics system called B-NASS+, which is used by approximately 5,000 sales and marketing employees globally to collect and analyze data from thousands of point-of-sale systems, Shiseido needed a scalable, highly performant, and stable solution that could support growing data volumes and the diverse analytical demands of its workforce. By moving to OCI, Shiseido was able to improve the processing performance of B-NASS+ and reduce its operational costs. In addition, B-NASS+ can now deliver real-time analytics to its employees, including sales performance and customer insights such as the likelihood of repurchase.

“With OCI, we built a new system with the performance, scalability, and flexibility to handle our growing data volumes and diverse analytics needs while also enabling us to benefit from generative AI and machine learning capabilities in the future,” said Atsunori Takano, Chief Information Technology Officer, Shiseido, and Co-Representative Director and President, Shiseido Interactive Beauty. “The transition to Oracle Exadata Database Service and Oracle Analytics Cloud was seamless, and most importantly, it maintained the same user experience for our employees. In addition, we modernized our systems and empowered our teams with real-time data for more informed decision-making.”

Shiseido Interactive Beauty Company Limited, the subsidiary responsible for driving Shiseido’s IT and digital transformation, was tasked with rebuilding, operating, and developing the B-NASS+ system. Since migrating to Oracle Exadata Database Service, the off-peak batch processing of B-NASS+ has accelerated by approximately 90 percent, resulting in improved response time. With Oracle Analytics Cloud, Shiseido has developed a new self-service business intelligence environment that enables it to analyze a wide range of data with high flexibility. This has enabled Shiseido to accelerate its data analytics process and empower its teams to make decisions with actionable information.

“The skincare industry is one of the most competitive sectors globally, driven by the constant influx of new trends, products, changing preferences, and brands,” said Kothanda Umamageswaran, senior vice president, Exadata and Scale-Out Technologies, Oracle. “To stand out, companies must leverage the latest AI and cloud technology to drive innovative customer-centric experiences. With OCI’s world-class architecture and the Exadata platform running Oracle databases at scale in the cloud, Shiseido was able to migrate mission-critical systems quickly and reliably to the cloud, capturing the cloud’s economic benefits. Shiseido is now well-positioned to enhance its innovation capabilities and continue delivering cutting-edge beauty innovations for the future.”

Shiseido received the Data Platform Innovation Award in the infrastructure category at the 2024 Customer Excellence Awards hosted by Oracle Corporation.
