The San Diego County Office of Education recently awarded its first-ever Community-Based Organization of the Year award to the San Marcos Promise. This was one of four awards in school counseling leadership given out this year across the county. The recipients were evaluated based on their impact in improving the health, well-being, and success of elementary, middle, and high school students.

“We chose TSMP for several reasons, but a main contributor was the fact that their leadership team is made up of former district school counselors who have great relationships and partnerships with school site employees. Because of their counseling background, they are acutely aware of the academic, social, college, and career needs of students,” said Tanya Bulette, K-12 School Counseling Services Coordinator for the San Diego County Office of Education.

The recently launched Future Centers located onsite at all three San Marcos district high schools are a key accomplishment recognized by the Office of Education. The Future Centers assist with college and career readiness support, empowering students to graduate college and be career-ready with foundational job skills, self-confidence, and a clearer idea about their career path.

“We are humbled to be their first-ever recipient of this award. The collaborative efforts we have with school employees and external resources like local businesses and post-high school educational programs have been key to providing students with the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential after high school. This school year alone, our Career and Financial Aid Coaches have been able to help over 2,000 students via Future Center services,” said Lisa Stout, Executive Director of The San Marcos Promise.

"What we learn in the Future Center is very helpful. These things just aren't taught in school. You learn about how to get a job, how to budget. It gives you a lot of experience and knowledge you need to become an adult. Otherwise, you wouldn't know until you had to figure it out all alone," said Ren, Twin Oaks High School student.

Lisa Stout continued,“Thank you to our partner district, San Marcos Unified School District, whom we have the privilege of working alongside, and to the San Diego County Office of Education for recognizing us with this honor.”
