Today, Royal DSM - a global, purpose-led, science-based company active in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living - announced that its four plants in Jiangsu have joined the first batch of companies in China’s Jiangsu Province to sign Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreements. The four plants, which will become among the first in the province to run on renewable energy, are DSM Engineering Materials (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. ("Jiangyin Plant"), DSM Jiangshan Pharmaceutical (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. ("Jiangshan Plant"), DSM (Jiangsu) Biotechnology Co., Ltd (“DJB Plant”), and Biomin China Co., Ltd (“Biomin Plant”). The agreement puts all four sites on track to be powered by 100% renewable energy from January 2022.

As a purpose-led company, DSM (dsm.com) is committed to enhancing sustainability through the green transformation of all of its production and operations. In China, DSM has worked actively to promote a greener local energy structure. The participation of all four Jiangsu-based DSM sites in the first batch of renewable energy transactions shows the company’s deep commitment to be firmly rooted in China and to work with local partners to realize a low-carbon green future.

"China is one of DSM’s most important regional markets," said Joe Zhou, President of DSM China. “The country’s green transformation and industrial upgrading are crucial for DSM to achieve our sustainability goals. DSM is committed to sourcing 75% of its global energy needs from renewable resources by 2030. The signing of the Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreement for all of DSM’s plants in Jiangsu will make a significant contribution to achieving our goal. DSM is actively aligning with the concept of green development and will continue to work closely with all of our partners to enhance local innovation capabilities and use energy more efficiently across the value chain. We are committed to supporting China in achieving the dual goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060."

Jiangsu Province is a key area for DSM’s operations in China. The four local plants provide important production capacity for DSM's business in nutrition, food and beverages, and materials. DSM was thus eager to participate in the opening of Jiangsu’s renewable electricity market to accelerate energy reform in the region.

The renewable energy upgrade will first be complete at the Jiangyin Plant by September 2021, making it the second DSM plant in China to achieve 100% renewable energy production after the Laiwu Plant in Shandong Province. Even before the Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreement was signed, the Jiangyin Plant was a forerunner in green manufacturing, using self-generated solar power to produce high-performance materials. Once the upgrade is complete, all high-performance engineering materials supplied by DSM China will be made using 100% renewable energy.

The renewable energy initiative in Jiangsu has opened new pathways to energy conservation and carbon reduction in manufacturing, allowing DSM to realize sustainable growth and environmental benefits while enhancing the competitiveness of the products.

Sustainability is a core driver for DSM’s business. The company works to actively promote a low-carbon circular economy and is committed to pursuing profitable growth while playing a positive role in the world. At the end of 2020, DSM's joint venture Shandong ICD High Performance Fibres Co., Ltd. became the first DSM site in China to sign a Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreement and be powered by 100% renewable energy. Within less than a year, the second plant to be powered by 100% renewable energy will be realized in Jiangsu, with three more to come. These steps demonstrate DSM's commitment to accelerate low-carbon sustainable development.

Recently, DSM committed to halving its 2016 greenhouse gas emissions from operations by 2030, exceeding the original target of a 30% reduction. DSM will continue to lead the industry in green development and create brighter lives for all by implementing production models that are low-carbon, circular, and sustainable, based on the three dimensions of the "People, Planet and Profit."
