The Walworth County Economic Development Agency (WCEDA) held its 2020 Annual Meeting on Thursday, Dec. 3. In keeping with the times, the meeting was held virtually with nearly 100 attendees logging on to hear an inspiring talk given by keynote speaker Carolyn Gable and economic and business updates from WCEDA Executive Director Derek D’Auria.
“My hope for our Annual Meeting was to give attendees a lift with Carolyn Gable’s inspiring message, catch them up on our activities and status, and remind them that we are here to help with business needs,” says D’Auria. “We also wanted to acknowledge the good work of a few local organizations, and honor our outgoing board members.”
Keynote speaker Carolyn Gable spoke to attendees about achieving success in the face of adversity. Gable is the founder of a multimillion-dollar logistics firm, an acclaimed author, recipient of President George W. Bush’s Points of Light, Regional Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and the WBDC Entrepreneurial Woman of the Year. Carolyn was a featured speaker at TEDxBerkeley 2015, and has been the subject of numerous television and print media stories, including ABC’s 20/20 “The Millionaire Mind.” Her success has enabled her to give back through her Expect A Miracle Foundation and her Believe Project, which have served over 8,000 children.
D’Auria presented awards to two local businesses in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the community. The David E. Bretl Community Betterment Award was given to the Open Arms Free Clinic, the first and only free medical and supportive care clinic in Walworth County, in recognition of its continued efforts to provide low-income and uninsured residents with primary medical, dental, vision, behavioral health, lab, and pharmaceutical assistance.
The Business Technology Investment Award was given to Adams Power for its work with new iWave ionization purifier systems for homes, businesses, and schools. Adams donated purifier systems to two area high schools for use in their Fab Lab and Tech Ed classrooms.
Two outgoing WCEDA Board Members Kikkoman Vice President of Administration Dan Miller and Patrick DeMoon, an attorney with Sweet & Maier were also recognized for their contributions to the organization during their tenure.
