Boeing Phantom Works’ Advanced Manufacturing Research and Development (AMR&D) team in St Louis, which focuses on providing engineering, information and manufacturing technologies for use by all Boeing business units, selected the OMNITROL as a development tool to evaluate aspects of edge device controllers. Specifically, the OMNITROL is used to explore Domain Specific Languages, process simulation, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Application Level Events (ALE), and Java Business Integration (JBI).
The OMNITROL provides Boeing’s AMR&D team with a real-time integration platform to bring the work-floor information to manufacturing back-end applications without the cost and complexity of middleware-based approaches. The team has built a benchmark for edge devices based on Omnitrol’s unique Edge Application Service Engine (EASETM) and Service Description Language (SDL). The Edge Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and powerful device adaptation capabilities allow Boeing to quickly integrate manufacturing applications with a large variety of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), RFID and barcode readers, WiFi RTLS, laser projection systems, sensors, and motes.
“Our current focus is on lean manufacturing, common systems, and ergonomics. To prepare for the next step function improvement in aircraft manufacturing, the Advanced Manufacturing Research & Development organization is exploring network enabled manufacturing,” said Bryan Dods, Boeing Phantom Works Senior Manager of Aerostructures Manufacturing. “Omnitrol Networks helps us create such an environment by providing the capability to collect, analyze, correlate, and act upon edge device and applications data in a highly adaptive, real-time environment”.
This new breed of real-time operational visibility that integrates the new generation of sensor and RFID technology provides traceability and reconciliation to optimize operations, reduces inefficiencies and expenses and improves overall customer service on the factory-floor and throughout the production and supply-chain.
“We are extremely pleased to be participating in Boeing’s advanced manufacturing projects,” said Raj Saksena CEO of Omnitrol Networks. “Our work with Boeing represents a significant milestone in the development of the OMNITROL as a powerful edge network appliance that removes the complexity of middleware solutions”.
The intelligent OMNITROL network enables not only a new level of visibility, but also new opportunities for automation and decision making for operations management throughout the manufacturing shop-floor and the suppliers network.
