Mondi has joined forces with Cartro (cartro.com.mx), a leading Mexican corrugated packaging company, to deliver a sustainable solution for fresh produce
Out of this box comes pure sustainability. With a view to entering the fresh produce market, leading Mexican corrugator Cartro decided to team up with Mondi and create a product that can withstand all the challenges of transportation.
According to the 2019 State of Food and Agriculture Report published by the FAO*, a mind-blowing 14% of the world’s food is lost between harvest and the point of sale. Inadequate storage and transportation are among the main causes.
Appropriate packaging is essential
Together Cartro (cartro.com.mx) and Mondi have tackled this challenge and developed a completely new corrugated box that stands out from the competition. The solution is based on FirstClassFlutes by Mondi, which is our high-quality portfolio of paper grades and includes ProVantage Kraftliner Aqua.
The grades offer high edge crush test (ECT) and box compression test (BCT) values, providing excellent strength in humid conditions, while at the same time allowing for an 18% weight reduction. In addition to material savings, Cartro is also able to cut costs and run higher corrugator speeds because the boxes do not need to be coated with paraffin.
The outcome is a strong, sustainable and humidity-resistant box design that overcomes the difficulties of long-distance food transport and reduces food waste.

Our company is the biggest independent corrugator in Mexico and known for reliability and quality. Thus, when we decided to enter a new market, we needed to be able to stick to our guiding principle of ‘Quality on time’. We wanted the new packaging to be a quality reference point, so we joined forces with Mondi to develop a lightweight corrugated box that can withstand the challenges of long haul transport in humid environments.
