Testing the applicability of emerging technologies in real industrial conditions, that's in the DNA of ENGIE Laborelec (laborelec.com), a company of Tractebel BU. The team “Wind Energy” has just completed the installation of an innovative ultrasonic system to protect bats on one of the 4 wind turbines at the ENGIE Electrabel wind park of Modave, Belgium.

Bats are attracted to wind turbines, which because of the heat they produce, are favourable places for insects, making them an interesting hunting ground for them. In doing so, bats are at risk of being struck by the blades of wind turbines or being victims of turbulence.

This project is a first in Europe and perfectly illustrates one of ENGIE Laborelec’s most fundamental roles: providing support to operators in testing the practical application of emerging technologies in real operating conditions.
