SCHOTT, a leading international technology group in the areas of specialty glass and glass-ceramics, is proud to announce new developments in its continuing partnership with Chinergy Co., Ltd and Jiamusi Electric Machine Co., Ltd. The companies will work together on component development for commercial power-scale 600MWe high-temperature modular reactors (HTR-PM600) to fulfill growing energy demands in China. SCHOTT will display its Eternaloc® electrical assemblies (EPAs) at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris from June 26-28 (Paris Nord Villepinte Hall 7, Booth D196). Additionally, SCHOTT nuclear safety expert Thomas Fink will give a presentation at the exhibition on June 28 at 11:30. The topic will be high-quality component selection for increased longevity and reduced ownership costs for new builds.

Glass-to-metal sealed SCHOTT Eternaloc® electrical penetration assemblies, already installed at the Shidaowan twin-reactor high temperature reactor, will be utilized in the HTR-PM600 units to support reliable power and signal transmission. This project represents a significant step forward for rapidly developing energy infrastructure in China. Nuclear power has quickly emerged as a viable power generation option as an alternative to coal-fired plants that create heavy pollution.

High-temperature modular reactors in particular are an appealing choice. They are factory-produced before being shipped to the construction site for final assembly a shorter and more efficient process than that of traditional, fully on-site reactor construction. Greater process control in a factory setting enables production and integration of the highest quality components possible, a significant advantage for the safety-critical nuclear power industry.

SCHOTT Eternaloc® EPAs, already used in over 100 nuclear power plants worldwide, have found a home in high-temperature modular reactors due to their extremely robust properties that deliver uncompromising seal integrity for a qualified component lifetime of 60 years. High-temperature modular reactors have unique installation requirements for EPAs, as well as the need for components able to withstand high temperature conditions in their operation. SCHOTT has worked directly with Chinergy and Jiamusi Electric Machine to tailor EPAs that solve both challenges, subsequently making Eternaloc® components the only current viable electrical penetration solution for modular reactors.

Thomas Fink, General Manager, Nuclear Safety Division at SCHOTT, comments: “High-temperature modular reactors had previously been referred to exclusively as ‘small modular reactors, ’ or SMRs, because of their limited power generation capabilities that maxed out at 200MWe and were only suitable for small-scale uses. With the new HTR-PM600 project, the modular reactor is getting added muscle and will emerge as an intriguing option for commercial power generation. We are proud to be supplying Eternaloc® electrical penetration assemblies for this exciting project as part of our cross-functional collaboration between the teams at Chinergy, Jiamusi Electric Machine, and SCHOTT.”

While the HTR-PM600 project is in the early stages, Chinergy has begun preliminary development work at a site in Wan’an, Fujin province. Location selection for a second HTR-PM600 unit is ongoing and has a list of potential sites that includes Sanmen in Zhejiang, Xiapu in Fujian, and Bai'an in Guangdong. The first units are planned to be built in pairs for a total output of 1200MWe and completion is currently scheduled for 2022-2023.

For questions, contact Thomas Fink, General Manager Nuclear Safety at SCHOTT.
