Maxitech.biz, in conjunction with Hewlett-Packard (HP), is giving London residents an opportunity to donate their old computers, mobile phones and other IT equipment to help vulnerable children supported by children’s charity NCH.

To mark this year’s international Earth Day, households in London can drop off their unwanted computers, monitors, printers, mobile phones, digital cameras and scanners at Maxitech.biz premises (5 Clarendon Road, Haringey, North London N22) at any time between 10am and 6pm on 21stth and 22nd April. The IT equipment will then be professionally refurbished; some will be given to the NCH; some resold at low cost to UK-based organisations unable to afford brand-new computers; and those items which cannot be reused will be recycled by a specialized recycling plant. Any proceeds made from reselling the IT equipment will be used to fund Maxitech.biz’s Edge Employer IT hardware training programme, which helps disadvantaged people gain nationally recognized qualifications leading to jobs in IT.

Peter Paduh, managing director at Maxitech.biz, comments: “There are hundreds of thousands of old computers in London homes doing nothing, but just as many people in our local community and across the UK who cannot afford to buy this kind of equipment at full price. We’d like as many people as possible to bring their unwanted IT down to Maxitech so that it can be put to good use.”

Paduh continues: ’’We’ve made this event part of the Earth Day 2007 celebrations because reusing IT equipment has significant environmental benefits, as well as creating opportunities for disadvantaged communities at the same time.’’

Dr Kirstie McIntyre, who heads up IT recycling and reuse programmes for HP in the UK, added; “Refurbishing computer equipment and making IT accessible to the wider community is one of the most effective ways of reducing the impact of IT waste on the environment. It’s something HP has been doing for many years, so we’re really proud to be supporting Maxitech.biz in this initiative and hope that this will be the first of a series of events in the UK.”

Kam Matharu, NCH’s Head of Children & Technology says: “Every child deserves the chance to take advantage of new technology regardless of their background or situation. The launch of this innovative scheme will improve the lives of many of the young people and their families that we work with by making IT more accessible.”
Anyone wishing to donate equipment on 21-22 April, should go to the Maxitech.biz parking area at Maxitech.biz Ltd, Unit A10, The Chocolate Factory, 5 Clarendon Road, London N22 6XJ, between 10am and 6pm on 21-22 April.

3) NCH is one of the UK’s leading children’s charities, working in partnership to run nearly 500 services for more than 160,000 of the UK’s most vulnerable children, young people and their families NCH was previously known as National Children's Home.
