Nordic PCL Construction, Inc. was recognized by the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) with the Kukulu Hale Sustainability Development Award from the Hawaii chapter for their work on the Punahou School, Grades 2 5 Neighborhood, Phase 1a project.
The Punahou School project successfully represents Punahou’s educational philosophy for the 21st century by incorporating sustainable solutions that resulted in an environmentally efficient and economically successful property. For years, elementary teachers and staff at the school aimed to understand the connection between learning and the environment. They discovered that openness and flexibility fosters creativity and collaboration, ultimately deciding to incorporate these principles into the construction of the new neighborhood for grades 2 5. The new Grade 2 5 Building offers a multifaceted landscape of learning that taps into children’s natural sense of curiosity, discovery, and play while grounding them in an intimate and nurturing environment. Punahou School is teacher-inspired, student-centered, and research-driven, built to the highest levels of green building and design. The project is registered as a LEED® Platinum building and incorporates sustainable elements such as living walls in the stairwells, natural lighting and ventilation, and plexiglass floor toughs on the second-floor sidewalks.
