Calkins Media, publisher of the Bucks County Courier Times, announces the official launch of the Buck County Courier Times’ 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week channel. The video stream delivers high-quality local news, sports, lifestyle and entertainment programming, adding another option in storytelling to the company’s inventory of community journalism. The channel is accessed in a variety of ways, each under the Bucks County Courier Times brand: on the Courier Times website at buckscountycouriertimes.com/watch; via free app downloads on streaming devices such as Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV; or Apple and Google Play users can search stores for "Courier Times TV Everywhere." Once in the no-cost apps, choose “Watch Now” to view the channel.
“Technology gives us so many options to connect our stories with a curious and digitally savvy audience,” said Michael Jameson, vice president of operations for Calkins Media. “The staff of the Bucks County Courier Times is pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to be a modern news organization. Building a video channel for Bucks County is just the latest success in reaching our audience where they want to be.”
The vision for the channel came from Chief Executive Officer Mark Contreras. Joining Calkins Media five years ago to lead the newspaper, broadcast and digital company, Contreras understood that news consumers' habits were changing and there was a growing demand for video. He guided the organization through its evolution to a digitally-focused media organization, making the 24/7 streaming channel possible.
Jake Volcsko, director of marketing and digital services, said the 24/7 channel is “a product and a process of which I am proud to be a part.”
“We spent a lot of time and effort over the past 14 months, putting together something that’s never been done in print media before at least not to this degree. This is only a start, but we wanted to give the people of Bucks County a TV station they can call their own.”
The majority of content on the channel is exclusively produced by Calkins Media staff. This ensures the focus on Bucks County and the issues most pertinent to readers and viewers, said Carol Angela Davis, the digital video director at Calkins Media.
“We are hyper-local and we really know Bucks County,” said Davis. “Our staff has worked hard as its community watchdog since 1954 and the (24/7) channel is an opportunity to expand this depth of coverage into all things video. From daily news, to your garden, to your pets, to your health and welfare, to arts and entertainment, we’ve got a show by, for and about you, your friends and your neighbors.”
The full line up of shows is available on the Courier Times website. Some of the shows include the high school sports program Game On, a local restaurant feature called Eat This!; a cooking show Cook This!; a garden program called In the Garden and many others.
Local businesses now have the opportunity to advertise with commercials on the channel, providing yet another way to bring the community into the Courier Times’ new content distribution platforms.
There are plans in the future to expand the 24/7 channels to the other news organizations under the Calkins Media umbrella, The Intelligencer and The Burlington County Times.
