The signing ceremony took place at the Indonesia Infrastructure Week Conference and Exhibition 2016 (IIWCE 2016) on November 8th 2016 attended by Vice-President, H.E. Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, The President Advisory Council represented by H.E Suharso Monoarfa and Minister of National Development Planning, H.E Bambang P.S Brodjonegoro.
The world’s largest archipelago with more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia has one of the most abundant tidal energy resources in the world. PT AIR and DCNS/OpenHydro have been working together over the past 18 months, assessing the most suitable sites to develop tidal energy projects and identifying at least 10 locations where commercial scale projects could be deployed.
Thierry Kalanquin, Chairman of OpenHydro and Vice President Energy at DCNS, said: “A key focus of the collaboration between DCNS/OpenHydro and PT AIR is the development of an industry in Indonesia to support the development of tidal energy projects. The nature of the equipment involved in tidal energy projects results in a high level of local manufacturing content. PT AIR is well placed to identify and secure the necessary skills and expertise through collaboration with DCNS/OpenHydro.”
Panji Adhikumuro Soeharto, President Director at PT AIR, said: “Our partnership combines the mature and proven OpenHydro tidal turbine technology and project development capability, with PT AIR local expertise in relation to the Indonesian tidal environment and development process. In addition, DCNS’ industrial expertise will combine with PT AIR’s local knowledge to develop an industry which will be geared up to support the construction of tidal energy industry delivering projects from pilot scale to full commercial realisation.”
OpenHydro and PT AIR are preparing to carry out further site characterisation surveys over the coming months, after which a site for the first pilot array of up to 10MW will be earmarked. After this initial phase, planned for deployment in 2019, it is envisaged the project will grow to a target installed capacity of 300MW by 2023.
The pilot array will combine equipment provided by DCNS/OpenHydro from Europe, with locally manufactured content and final assembly, maintenance and installation in partnership with PT AIR. Local industrial facility options have been identified and will be assessed and selected by the partners.
About PT AIR
PT AIR (ptair.co.id) is an Indonesian company focused on Marine Renewable Energy. The company is spearheading the marine tidal energy industry in Indonesia. PT. AIR’s manufacturing facility manufactures Tidal Turbine Products for use in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia. The company works closely with Marine Consulting and Coastal Engineering Research firm, PT. ASR which has been actively surveying and scouting suitable locations for Tidal energy projects throughout the Indonesian Archipelago.
About OpenHydro
OpenHydro (openhydro.com) is a DCNS company specialising in the design, manufacture and installation of marine turbines generating renewable energy from tidal streams. The company’s vision is to deploy turbine arrays under the surface of the oceans to produce energy silently, invisibly and with no impact on the environment. OpenHydro has achieved a number of industry firsts including being the first to deploy a tidal turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), the first to connect to and generate electricity from tidal streams onto the UK National Grid and the first to successfully demonstrate a method of safely and economically deploying and recovering turbines directly on the seabed. The deployment and recovery method delivers a step change in the economics of tidal energy.
OpenHydro has a project portfolio spanning Canada, France, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Channel Islands and Japan, with utility partners including Emera, EDF, Brookfield Renewable Energy Group, SSE Renewables and Alderney Renewable Energy. OpenHydro has won a number of awards for its innovations in the field of renewable energy technology.
