Discovery Green and Green Mountain Energy Company today announced the downtown Houston park is continuing its commitment to power its facilities with 100 percent clean energy. Discovery Green has renewed its contract with Green Mountain through 2018 to provide electricity for all of the park’s needs, including concerts and events. Green Mountain is the exclusive energy title sponsor of the park’s Fall Thursday Concert Series and the Discovery Green Flea by Night monthly market.
This milestone marks a decade of commitment to renewable energy for Discovery Green. First teaming up with Green Mountain in 2008, Discovery Green has since become a showcase for environmental stewardship and energy conservation in downtown Houston and has avoided more than 22 million pounds of carbon dioxide by partnering with Green Mountain.
“We’re thrilled to continue our commitment to clean energy with our partners at Green Mountain,” said Barry Mandel, president of Discovery Green Conservancy. “Sustainability is not just a catch phrase for us it’s a way of life and it’s important we ‘walk the talk’ by powering our facilities with clean energy.”
By choosing renewable energy over traditional fossil fuel generation for the next two years, Discovery Green will avoid an additional 5.9 million pounds of carbon dioxide. That’s like planting more than 700 trees, enough to cover the 12 acres at Discovery Green nearly four times.
“Discovery Green is the perfect showcase for how environmental best practices can be applied in an urban setting,” said Mark Parsons, vice president and general manager of Green Mountain. “We’re proud to be the Official Green Energy Provider for Discovery Green and help them deliver on their renewed commitment as an environmental steward for the community.”
In addition to choosing to power the park with clean energy, Discovery Green uses the latest “green” building methods to operate sustainably. The organization achieved the national benchmark with a Gold rating from the LEED Green Building Rating System, and is one of 764 organizations recognized as a 100 percent Green Power User from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Infinity Power Partners, a Houston-based energy management and consulting firm, has assisted Discovery Green in structuring, facilitating and executing the sponsorship and commercial electricity contracts with Green Mountain since 2012.
