Parsippany, NJ, United States, 2016/05/16 - Gift of Life Marrow Registry has facilitated 3,000 transplants, and registered nearly a quarter million donors since it was founded. The annual gala will introduce bone marrow donation recipients to their life-saving donors for the first time.
You can accomplish a lot in 25 years. In fact, you can help save 3,000 lives ... and offer hope to thousands more.
The Gift of Life Marrow Registry has roots dating back a quarter century, to 1991, when Founder and CEO Jay Feinberg was diagnosed with leukemia. The four long years he spent searching for a bone marrow donor ultimately led to the founding of an organization responsible for 3,000 transplants, 13,000 identified matches, and perhaps most remarkable of all the registration of nearly a quarter million potential donors.
“The time I spent battling the disease and searching for the donor who could save my life it had a profound impact on me,” explains Feinberg, who had his transplant in May 1995 and soon after founded Gift of Life. “It was frightening … harrowing. So, once I had my transplant and my life was saved, I decided to do something that could help others struggling with a health crisis similar to what I’d experienced. It’s been challenging at times, but I believe that most worthwhile undertakings are.”
Gift of Life will hold its 16th annual gala at which it will introduce a major organizational rebranding in New York City, at the Grand Hyatt New York, on June 2. The emcee will be Broadway, Hollywood, and television actress Tovah Feldshuh. The 2016 event honors Wendy Siegel, bone marrow transplant recipient and wife of Stephen Siegel, chairman of Global Brokerage at CBRE, the world’s largest commercial real estate services company. Siegel will receive the Partners in Life award for her service to others in need, and will be one of three transplant recipients who will be meeting their donor for the very first time.
“It’s difficult to express in words what this 25th anniversary means to me,” adds Feinberg. “My own life and my own experiences are so closely tied to this organization. The good that it has done for so many people is important, and deserves to be celebrated each year. And that’s why we hold our gala.”
