The solution, TDtv, is based on its time division code division multiple access (TD-CDMA) technology, along with multimedia broadcast and multicast services (MBMS).
This is a truly innovative solution that is set to capitalize on consumers’ growing interest in accessing TV on their mobile phones and will allow them to experience high-performance mobile TV at reasonable costs.
Undeniably, delivery technologies, whether network-based or broadcast, are critical to the future of mobile TV. Capacity is already a key issue and will become an even more critical one as consumer demand begins to outstrip wireless network capacity.
Consumer preferences for mobile television will evolve with linear and on-demand programming that is personalized, interactive, location aware and time independent.
“The challenge, therefore, will not be to simply add more network capacity but to blend the appropriate technologies to match consumer requirements,” says Frost & Sullivan Industry Manager Sivakumar Muthuramalingam. “TDtv is one such mobile TV solution that satisfactorily addresses these issues.”
One of the most significant advantages of TDtv lies in the easy availability of spectrum. Unlike competing multicast solutions, 3G operators have already been allocated and own the necessary unpaired TDD spectrum for TDtv as part of their universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) licenses.
UMTS operators can utilize the existing 3G spectrum to provide mobile television services to consumers. This allows them to maximize profits without having partner and share revenues with broadcast operators.
With mobility being an obvious and key driver for the adoption of mobile TV, the key challenge is whether novel broadcasting technologies such as TDtv can support vehicular mobility.
Currently, this solution delivers handover and full mobility at speeds of up to 200kmph, allowing use on trains and mass transit systems. Soon, it is likely to support mobility at speeds up to 400 kmph, helping ensure virtually uninterrupted programming at high vehicular speeds.
Several multinational operators have already announced TDtv trials and riding on the success of these trials, IPWireless expects to have a commercial TDtv offering in place in mid-2007.
“The TDtv platform also allows easy integration into the core system architecture, as it is based on the existing 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard. This enables the re-use of numerous end-user device components and makes the process of integration highly cost effective,” adds Muthuramalingam.
