A Vermont bed & breakfast and retreat center known for hospitality and a picturesque setting in Warren, Vermont has just completed a sizeable green initiative investment. Peter and Susan MacLaren, owners of West Hill House B&B and Retreat Center, participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug 27, 2015 to celebrate the opening of Same Sun Solar Society of Poultney, Vermont, a solar farm that will fully power their facility.
West Hill House B&B and Retreat Center is the largest private investor in the solar farm, holding over a 25% financial stake in the system designed and built by Same Sun of Vermont Inc., and incorporating US-manufactured solar panels.
“It’s very important for us to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible. An investment of this scale into a solar farm is a great complement to our Tesla-designated charging stations. It’s very important to our many Tesla driving guests to know that when they are charging their vehicle and enjoying overnight hospitality, a minimal impact on the environment is being made,” said West Hill House B&B and Retreat Center Co-Owner Peter MacLaren.
“We also hope that we can set an example for other Vermont businesses and show that not only do green technologies make sense economically and environmentally, but you can also support local green energy companies,” MacLaren said.
Vermont’s Department of Tourism Commissioner, Megan Smith, aware of the initiative stated,“Small inns and B&B’s are an important part of Vermont’s identity, and ‘green hospitality’ is more than a trend here. West Hill House B&B and Retreat Center’s initiatives tap into travelers’ growing interest in sustainability and support the Vermont brand.”
This major new green initiative adds to the many other investments in environmentally-focused systems and operations that the B&B has made over the last nine years.

West Hill House B&B and Retreat Center is a historic 1850’s home in the Mad River Valley of Vermont. The property was transformed to a B&B in the early 1980s. Peter & Susan MacLaren purchased it in 2006, and today West Hill House B&B & Retreat Center is a comfortable and inviting nine room bed and breakfast.
