Architectural Gardens’ transformative design for a Tudor-style home has won a 2015 Excellence in Landscape Award from the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association. A completely new layout of the outdoors spaces and a reintroduction of traditional materials has helped blend a new building addition with the original structure and solve backyard flooding issues at the same time.
In collaboration with the client’s architect and builder, Architectural Gardens developed a bold new layout for the driveway and garage, removing over 1,600 square feet of unneeded asphalt and an impractical deck to make way for a spacious stone patio and open lawn that is now surrounded by a border of flowering trees and shrubs.
With a generously-sized front lawn, a vehicle turn-around was positioned near the front door to provide a convenient place to disembark. This also enables the homeowner to pull out of the driveway facing forward, instead of backing into the street. In the shared space between the client’s and the neighbor’s driveways, a lush arrangement of ornamental trees, flowering shrubs, ornamental grasses, and groundcovers improves the undervalued strip of ground and allows rainwater runoff to be reabsorbed on site. New technologies such as a self-draining irrigation system were added for convenience and to reduce seasonal servicing.
Planting beds in the front and rear for this English Tudor Gem integrate characteristic English garden plants like boxwood, hydrangea, coral bells and astilbe along with today’s hardy ornamental grasses and smaller-scale ornamental trees perfectly suited for suburban lots.
The 2015 Excellence in Landscape Award was presented to Margaret Morrissette, President of Architectural Gardens, at a February 26 awards ceremony. This is the fourth award Architectural Gardens has received from the ILCA which is one of the country’s largest and well-established state associations for the landscape industry.
Landscape professionals across the state and region submit their best projects for judging by a panel of industry experts. The annual awards competition is a showcase of unique and beautiful gardens located primarily in the Chicago area.
