Donna Friess rose to international attention when she and her sisters were forced to stop their father from continued molestation of his four-year-old granddaughter. With appearances on Oprah and a cover story in the Los Angeles Times Magazine, The sisters’ intervention reached 50 million people. Many California and US laws were changed to make women and children safer as a result of Donna and her sisters’ efforts. Donna’s autobiography, Cry the Darkness, depicts growing up years with that same father and the gripping reality of the fifteen month long trial to protect their youngest family member. Her book was published in seven languages, becoming a best seller in Europe (HCI:1993). It has won many writing awards.
Donna’s husband, former SJC four term mayor, Ken, encouraged her to turn her attention toward fiction. The result is Donna’s first novel, a psychological drama, which takes the reader on a poignant journey though one woman’s experiences as she struggles to come to terms with her past choices. Coping with loss, and the anxiety of moving forward, the plot illuminates the social issues of the 1950’s - 70’s, surrounding the controversy of an adoptee’s right to know vs. a mother’s right to privacy. This captivating story is set in 2005 against a backdrop of the War in Iraq. Early readers describe this psychological drama as “stunning” with “well developed characters.” It is available through Kindle and Amazon.com in print or e-book (H.I.H. Publishing).
As a grief counselor, Donna facilitates a free Loss of a Loved One support group at the Community Center in San Juan Capistrano. Donna is an activist for children. She is a member of the U.S. Justice Department’s Office for Victims of Crime, TTAC, A Consortium.
The Unraveling of Shelby Forrest is available in print and Kindle format at Amazon.com/.
