With so much movement in the space, fluctuations in the USA/ European technology gap and substantial incremental growth in the industry – Text Analytics News asks Alessandro Zanasi, Independent Advisor to the European Commission and Olivier Jouve, VP Marketing at SPSS to give us their take on the future of text mining in Europe…
“The European Union, is increasingly pushing the development of text mining tools for security, one of the most significant verticals in Europe” says Zanasi. “European Union citizen attention is currently focused on some new issues: international terrorism, organised crime, WMD proliferation and all security. Text analytics has been chosen as a central technology to react to this new problem, safeguarding human rights and fundamental liberties”. A key note speaker at the upcoming European Text Analytics Summit in Amsterdam, Zanasi gives his prediction on forthcoming movements in Europe “I expect that in the future we will see the most interesting solutions in this area”
Olivier Jouve, SPSS talks frankly about the development of text mining in Europe “Most of the Text Analytics technologies available have been originally developed in Europe (even those sold in the US); and a great majority in France”. He continues “Europeans love their language and have started early to develop technologies to automatically analyze them. The European commission is a catalyser and has supported many initiatives for automatic translation, text analytics, search, etc. This is mainly due to the fact that they need to respond to the needs of 27 countries in EU, 23 official languages and several dialects” He says pointing out the need for multi lingual mining techniques over the next 12 months.
Both Olivier Jouve and Alessandro Zanasi will be taking these issues further at the European Text Analytics Summit this year. Amongst other confirmed vendor names, End users will be delivering case studies including the European Police, the Dutch Police, Merck KGaA, Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Organon; Telecom Italia, Deloitte, Cisco Systems and HP and more.
