Now in ceremony year sixteen, in Los Angeles on Sunday, December 14, 2014 in Beverly Hills, WIN honors deserving men and women whose outstanding film and television advances the value of women and girls. In addition to applauding competing film and television work which promotes the value of women and girls, WIN also invites deserving individuals to receive its prestigious honoree tributes.
About Joan Rivers
An entertainment legend of unparalleled talent, Joan Rivers was the first woman to break the glass ceiling of Late Night Television. After she was chosen to be the only permanent guest host on “The Tonight Show” for 3 years, she then went on to become the first woman ever to host her own late night talk show “The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers” on the Fox Network. WIN will present its Lifetime Achievement Honor posthumously to Joan Rivers, (who died September 4, 2014 and who is also a WIN Awards 2014 nominee). Rivers redefined the role of women in comedy, is remembered for her sharp-tongued, unapologetic comic style and for being a trailblazer for women in both comedy and entertainment. Although Rivers; unfiltered brand of comedy didn't always show it, the legendary entertainer had a heart of gold, having supported causes addressing AIDS & HIV, Animals, Cancer, Children, Depression and Suicide, Disaster Relief, Theater, Education, Family/Parent Support, Gay/Lesbian Support, Grief Support, Health, Homelessness, Hunger, Rape and Sexual Abuse, Physical Challenges, Poverty and Refugees.
An early HIV/AIDS activist Rivers helped destigmatized the disease. She supported amFAR and was an Honorary Director of God’s Love We Deliver, which provides food to HIV/AIDS patients. Rivers was also an avid supporter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. An ardent dog fan, Rivers used her star power to raise awareness for those living with visual impairments and was a longtime supporter of Guide Dogs for the Blind. The late comic's Hollywood career spans decades and in 1965, Rivers became a household name after landing in the spotlight during a guest appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. In1989, Rivers launched her daytime talk show The Joan Rivers Show which ran for five winning her a Daytime Emmy award in 1990 for Outstanding Talk Show Host. By 2011, Rivers and her daughter premiered their new show Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? on WEtv, which chronicled the unstoppable mother-daughter duo as they worked on careers and family. After creating and hosting Live from the Red Carpet for the E! Network (1996-2004), Joan returned to anchor their popular and successful franchise Fashion Police, hosting both its hour-long weekly broadcasts and its awards-season specials.
About Daphna Edwards Ziman
Humanitarian Honoree, Daphna Edwards Ziman shares the honoree stage with Joan Rivers, and says “I’ve loved Joan my whole life and we miss her. In fact, she and her daughter Melissa Rivers accepted our 2014 Fashion Icon Award at Cinemoi’s International Fashion Film Awards just two weeks before we lost her. It is heartbreaking”.
Humanitarian recipient, Daphna Edwards Ziman, is an activist, author, filmmaker, philanthropist, and, most recently, the founder of Cinémoi, an internationally-acclaimed U.S. lifestyle channel aimed at discerning viewers, showcasing curated films and high couture festivals from across the globe.
Renowned as a prominent Democratic Party activist and recognized internationally for her extraordinary results saving abandoned children, Ziman crusades non-stop for and lectures passionately about both children and women’s rights, especially supporting vulnerable at-risk and foster youth (who are the most incarcerated jailhouse population, and often become victims of prostitution and human trafficking). In addition, Ziman serves on the Board of Trustees of Children’s International and is a Chairperson of ABC LOVE (Adoption Brings Children Love). She also is Founder and Chairperson emeritus of Children Uniting Nations, and her longstanding tireless efforts for CUN have galvanized the Los Angeles community to mentor foster children in ever-increasing numbers. Ziman also successfully lobbied to have the Family Preservation Act amended, to fix its flaws, thereby ensuring the safety of children who enter the community after foster care. And inspired by her own experience adopting a daughter she rescued from a homeless shelter, Ziman authored the recent New York Times best-selling novel, The Gray Zone.
