In the long term, the government is aiming to export electricity. The opening of the river diversion for the Laúca Hydropower Project in early September by the President of the Republic of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos, marked a significant step forward. Lahmeyer supervised the project during its two-year construction phase.
Two horse-shoe shaped tunnels with an inner diameter of 14 m, a total length of 1,021 m, and the corresponding intake and outlet structures divert the water of River Kwanza. They are designed for a capacity of 4,337 m³/s each. The main project started in July 2013 and includes construction of the RCC dam, power cavern, waterways, and electromechanical equipment. Lahmeyer International, together with its international partner, also supervised these works.
The new Laúca plant forms part of Angola’s long term plan for electricity generation, in which hydroelectric power will assume a key role. The Angolan Government has allocated some 20 billion US dollars for the further development of the energy sector. The intention is to increase the country’s electricity production from the current level of 1,200 MW to 7,000 MW.
