In conjunction with Mother Earth News and Grit magazine’s Homesteading Education Month, GreenSun Products, LLC will host an “open farm” tour on Saturday, September 13.

The tour will include:
• Hands-on duckweed production and harvesting tour;
• Discussion on uses for duckweed as fresh feed for animals and fish;
• Discussion on uses for duckweed in gardens and composting;
• Growth techniques for urban homesteaders;
• Drying methods for winter storage.
“Duckweed is our most underutilized high protein food and feed source on the planet,” says Tamra Fakhoorian, coordinator for the tour. “Urban gardeners and farmers can take advantage of duckweed’s tremendous growth rate and high protein/carotene content to add vitality and reduced feed costs for farm animals and farmed fish. Its high nitrogen content makes it a natural for compost and soil amendments.”

The tour is free of charge and includes duckweed-based hor d’oeuvres and a local wine tasting. Donations are accepted for the International Lemna Association, the world’s first non-profit dedicated to development of farmed duckweed. Tours begin at 10 am.
