SAPPPHIRE Technology has announced that products from its Embedded Business unit will support the latest AMD Embedded G-Series System-on-chip (SOC) and central processing unit (CPU) family and 2nd Generation AMD Embedded R-Series accelerated processing unit (APU) and CPU family from AMD, enabling developers quickly to integrate these new technologies into system designs. SAPPHIRE is also the exclusive provider of AMD designed embedded reference platforms for developers seeking evaluation and development platforms.
New AMD Embedded G-Series Solutions released
SAPPHIRE will immediately be able to integrate the newly introduced x86 AMD Embedded G-Series SoC (previously codenamed: “Steppe Eagle”) and CPU (previously codenamed: “Crowned Eagle”) on a range of platforms offering a choice of format for different applications.
The new product families expand upon the high-performance, low-power capabilities of the award-winning AMD Embedded G-Series platform, bringing higher performance and integrated security with enterprise-class error-correction code (ECC) memory support, dual and quad-core variants, integrated discrete-class GPU and I/O controller on the same die.
Because the new product families are pin-compatible across the AMD Embedded G-Series SoC and CPU family, SAPPHIRE is able to integrate these products into a choice of platforms and offer scalability across a range of embedded applications including communications and networking infrastructure, industrial control and automation (IC&A), thin clients, gaming machines, and digital signage. To meet this broad range of applications, SAPPHIRE is able to offer multiple platform formats including not just mini-ITX and thin mini-ITX, but also the industry standard Q7 plug-in board and the increasingly popular 4x4 inch format or full custom designs if needed.
Among the key features of the “Steppe Eagle” series are a choice of ultra low-power solutions (down to 5 watts TDP) and high-performance deployments with up to 53 percent more overall performance compared to previous G-Series SoC solutions1.
Processors in this series now include enhanced security features with the AMD platform security processor (PSP) built upon the ARM TrustZone® architecture, and designed to protect against malicious access to sensitive data and operations at the hardware level, making it an ideal fit for data sensitive applications such as cloud-based thin client solutions.
SAPPHIRE is the exclusive provider of the AMD embedded designed reference platform (codenamed “Olive Hill+”) and low cost reference board (DB-FT3b-LC) for the “Steppe Eagle” products.
2nd Generation AMD Embedded R-Series enhanced
The 2nd Generation AMD Embedded R-Series APU and CPU family (previously codenamed “Bald Eagle”) has been optimized for embedded applications. SAPPHIRE offers a choice of platforms targeted at gaming machines, medical imaging, digital signage, industrial control and automation (IC&A), and communications/networking infrastructure that require industry-leading compute and graphics processing technology. The AMD designed reference platform for “Bald Eagle” (codenamed Lamar) available exclusively from SAPPHIRE is a fully functional system with memory, HDD, power supply and software including a commercial grade Linux from Mentor
These 2nd Generation AMD Embedded R-Series APU and CPU solutions are designed for mid- to high-end visual and parallel compute-intensive embedded applications with support for Linux, Windows and Real Time operating systems. The new solutions offer up to 3.6 GHz CPU frequency with max boost based on AMD’s latest CPU architecture and up to 686 MHz GPU frequency based on AMD’s latest Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.
The new 2nd Generation AMD Embedded R-Series APU is the first embedded processor to incorporate Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) features, enabling applications to distribute workloads to run on the best compute element e.g., CPU, GPU or a specialized accelerator such as video decode, optimizing performance for both graphical and compute tasks.
The first new product from SAPPHIRE to exploit the “Bald Eagle” architecture is a new mini-ITX board with four DVI outputs and a Gen 3 PCIe x16 expansion slot targeted at the digital signage market.

1 Overall performance was measured using a suite of industry benchmarks consisting of 3DMark06, 3DMark11, POVRay v3.7, Passmark v7, PCMark8 v2.0, and BasemarkCL 1.0. The GX-412HC’s TDP is 7W and GX-210HA’s TDP is 9W. The performance delta of 53% was calculated based on GX-412HC’s geometric mean of 555.3 and GX-210HA’s geometric mean of 363.6. The performance-per-watt delta of 96% was calculated based on GX-412HC’s performance-per-watt ratio of 79.3 and GX-210HA’s performance-per-watt ratio of 40.4. The AMD Steppe Eagle GX-412HC and G-S SOC GX-210HA used an AMD Larne motherboard with 4GB DDR3-1333 memory and 320GB Toshiba HDD. The system ran Windows® 7 Ultimate.
