Pro Bono Partnership hosted its third SmorgasbonoSM Legal Q & A Program for Nonprofits, an event that brings together its volunteer attorneys and nonprofit clients. This year, more than 40 lawyers and two corporate governance professionals from BASF Corporation; Honeywell; Kirkland & Ellis LLP; Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C.; and Servilla Whitney LLC provided free legal and governance advice to 14 nonprofit clients of the Partnership. For the second time, BASF Corporation hosted this event at its North American headquarters in Florham Park, NJ. Matt Lepore, BASF Corporation’s General Counsel, Senior Vice President, and Chief Compliance Officer, kicked off the event.
Representatives from the nonprofit organizations spoke with the volunteers about contracts, corporate governance, environmental health and safety, insurance and litigation, intellectual property, internet and websites, labor and employment, privacy, or real estate matters. Nonprofits that attended the SmorgasbonoSM included: Boys & Girls Club of Clifton, BRICK Academy, Community Coordinated Child Care of Union County, Cornerstone Family Programs, Daytop Village of New Jersey, Family & Children’s Services, Gifted Child Society, Great Swamp Watershed Association, Morris County Organization for Hispanic Affairs, New Jersey Fallen Soldiers Foundation, Operation Beachhead, Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey, Passaic County Court Appointed Special Advocates, and The Learning Suite. These nonprofits would not be able to afford these legal services without reducing funding to their programs.
“Intellectual property, bylaws, and contracts it was all fantastic!” said Thomas Dresdner, President and CEO of New Jersey Fallen Soldiers Foundation. “I’ll be making changes to the organization as a result of the information provided.”
The legal volunteers had the opportunity to work with multiple nonprofits during the event and identified legal matters that needed to be addressed. The Partnership followed up with the clients to address those matters and many volunteers have agreed to continue working on those matters until they are complete.
Pro Bono Partnership extends its appreciation to all the volunteers who gave their time to assist its clients. They truly made a difference for these nonprofits and the individuals they serve.
