Turner Construction Company has a strong record of outreach, education, and long-established partnerships with minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) and this comprehensive program has resulted in contract awards and partnerships totaling more than $1 billion nationally to MWBEs each year for the last nine years.
Even during the recent economic downturn, Turner’s firm commitment to outreach remained strong and, since 1979, the company has awarded more than 65,000 contracts, for a total value of more than $22.7 billion, to MWBEs.
The company offers the Turner School of Construction Management which seeks to expand the opportunities available to MWBEs. More than 35,000 small business owners have graduated from the program, many of whom have gone on to win major construction contracts with Turner.
Notable projects that achieved outstanding MWBE inclusion results in 2013 include:
Mercy Health West Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio - Winner of South Central Ohio’s Healthcare Supplier Diversity Spirit Award for a Major Supplier, the project team exceeded their inclusion goals, achieving an impressive 28 percent economic inclusion to MWBEs.
Maryland Public Health Lab Project Baltimore, Maryland - The project team achieved a very aggressive 30 percent utilization with local businesses and achieved 33 percent utilization with minority- and women-owned businesses.
"Projects like these demonstrate our commitment to the larger goal of MWBE utilization across all of our work in all of our regions, and also highlight the extraordinary effort of our preconstruction and project teams to make it all happen on each project, establishing inclusion in both goals and actions," said Karen Sweeney, senior vice president, Diversity, Inclusion and Community.
