The CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system has created a lot of excitement in the field and Dr. Zhang's development of the technical applications for this system has been noted as a revolutionary tool, which has important implications in reducing the timeline and cost involved in the development of genetically modified animals for scientific research.
Dr. Zhang received his PhD in chemistry and bioengineering from Stanford University in 2009 and has been running his own laboratory at MITs McGovern Institute since 2011. In December of 2013 Dr. Zhang was featured by Nature magazine as one of the top 10 scientists of the year. “Especially for CRISPR/Cas9 as a technological application, Dr. Zhang has set the pace in this highly competitive field by contributing crucial findings. Moreover, he has made this technology transparent and thereby, applicable for the broad scientific community, which is a perfect example of how scientific questions lead to the development and utilization of new technologies.” states iTL president Paul Sheiffele.
iTL has sponsored the ISTT Young Investigator Award since the awards inception in 2011. This award is designed to recognize an early career scientist for their outstanding achievements in science and their contributions to the field of transgenic technologies. Prior recipients of the award are Dr. Xiao-Yang Zhao in 2011 and Dr. Toru Takeo in 2013. Dr. Feng Zhang will attend the 12th Transgenic Technology meeting in Edinburgh Scotland on October 6-8, 2014. The award will be presented by iTL representatives and includes financial support to attend the meeting, as well as a 1 year membership to the ISTT. The International Society for Transgenic Technologies (ISTT) is a non-profit society composed of world pioneers, scientific experts, students and researchers across the globe with an interest in the generation of transgenic animals for scientific research. iTL has been involved with the ISTT since 2007 and are proud to sponsor the ISTT Young Investigator Award.
About inGenious Targeting Laboratory (iTL)
Established in 1998, inGenious Targeting Laboratory (genetargeting.com) exclusively creates mice whose genetic make-up is tailored to the client’s research needs. Clients retain all intellectual property rights to their projects. A full range of project capabilities are available including: conventional and conditional knockouts, knockin models (humanized, inducible, reporter gene/cassette insertion, point mutations), as well as novel approaches for customized mouse models. Projects are initiated immediately upon completion of design parameters and progress to completion on-site in the USA, under the supervision of a dedicated scientific Project Manager. iTL is located in Ronkonkoma, New York.
