This operation brings together two players in the marine sector both with recognised wide-ranging expertise. It will lead to the joint development of innovative solutions for the great challenges the sea presents. It covers fields of knowledge on the constraints imposed by maritime and underwater environments, the safety of installations and systems and expert know-how in assembling highly different elements of mechanical and electronic technology.
The DCNS-Ifremer framework cooperation agreement hinges on three major sections:
• The first aims to support cooperation in technological innovation such as the development of ships for the future or electrical systems adapted for working in the marine environment.
• The second has the goal of developing joint exploration projects for sustainable development of maritime resources. The seas remain largely unexplored and harbour a wealth of raw materials, minerals and biodiversity. Oceans are moreover a substantial source of renewable energy, whether derived form ocean winds, movements of water or temperature differential between the cold depths and warmer surface waters.
• Finally the third one aims to facilitate the two partners’ access to land-based and sea-based facilities.
In addition, a technological project will launched in the coming years: trials with an Ifremer underwater drone. This operation will help speed-up development of submarine-related guidance and stowage systems for this type of device. Underwater drones are of increasing interest as high-technology research tools, whether applied for naval defence or deep-ocean exploration. Knowledge of the theatre of operations and intelligence in the military sector, sea floor exploration or environmental monitoring for civil purposes.
As Patrick Boissier, DCNS Chairman and CEO stated “This partnership will allow DCNS to speed up advances in security of the oceans and development of its resources by taking advantage of the know-how and technological assets of Ifremer for marine environment exploration. The projects DCNS (dcnsgroup.com) is going to develop jointly with Ifremer will enable us to propose innovatory solutions that meet customer needs in the naval defence or energy sectors.”
“This cooperation agreement is perfectly in line with Ifremer’s scientific and strategic priorities», explained Ifremer Chairman and Managing Director François Jacq. “This cooperation with DCNS helps Ifremer strengthen further its partnerships with the industrial world and contribute to forerunner development projects in the world of research, in France and internationally.”
