Based on its recent analysis of the biohazardous waste treatment market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Ozonator Industries Limited with the 2014 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation Leadership. Ozonator's innovative and relevant zero-emission biohazardous waste treatment technology ensures high environmental sustainability through its superior treatment efficiency and low energy consumption.
Ozonator's biohazardous waste treatment technology extracts oxygen from the ambient air and converts it to ozone with the help of a plasma ozone generator. This ozone is then used to treat the waste in a safe manner, at room temperature; no steam, heat, or by-products are generated during the process. After the treatment, any residual ozone is automatically converted back into oxygen.
"With the help of this technology, treatment plants can achieve more than 90 percent reduction in volume of biohazardous waste," said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Abhisek Ghosh. "Moreover, this efficient technology can easily treat any kind of biohazardous waste to 6 log 10 reduction (99.9999%), with the exception of large metal objects like titanium joints used in implant surgery."
Existing biohazardous waste treatment technologies perform rather inefficiently, and produce large quantities of by-products that have to be disposed of in a landfill. However, as land availability is decreasing rapidly, an efficient technology that can optimally reduce the amount of biohazardous waste will be well received.
Traditional waste treatment technologies such as incineration and autoclaving are highly energy-intensive. Apart from raising the cost of operation, most of these technologies work at a higher temperature range, which causes them to emit various waste gases and pollutants. In the case of chemical treatment technologies, plants use toxic and hazardous chemicals, which require substantial treatment before they can be finally discharged into the environment.
Ozonator Industries has successfully addressed these challenges by completely eliminating the need to dispose of by-products or residue. Thereby, it also negates the need for secondary processing and ensures high environmental sustainability.
Ozonator's system is a completely automated, stand-alone unit with a relatively small footprint. As it does not have boiler or stacks, it offers greater ease of operation and low maintenance costs. It can run around the clock, without requiring highly skilled labor and can easily treat up to 1,200 kilograms of biohazardous waste per hour using just 36 kWh of electricity.
"The operating cost of Ozonator's biohazardous waste treatment system only involves the cost of electrical energy - approximately $3.60 per hour of operation, which is considerably lower than that of the other competing technologies," noted Ghosh. "Moreover, due to its efficiency, the amount of residue produced after treatment is very little. This residue can be further used as raw material for energy production through a waste-gasifier."
Ozonator offers its patented system in different sizes and capacities. It is ideally suited for medical and bio-hazardous waste, quarantined waste from airports, border security, and prisons.
The company has also established a presence in various important global markets. Moreover, through its continuous in-house R&D, it continually improves the system's performance. This system is the only globally approved system for the treatment of anatomical wastes.
Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated uniqueness in developing and leveraging new technologies, which significantly impacts both the functionality and the customer value of the new products and applications. The award lauds the high R&D efforts spent towards innovation, its relevance to the industry, and the positive impact on brand perception.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
