Jotun Powder Coatings has affirmed its continued support towards sustainable architecture trends through ‘The Cool Shades Collection, ’ a range of energy-saving and environmentally friendly powder coatings that have been specially formulated to reduce the temperature of aluminum building components exposed to the sun. ‘The Cool Shades Collection’ is a range of heat reflective architectural powder coatings that helps reduce energy consumption and improve interior comfort of inhabitants.
The company commissioned the services of German sustainable architecture consultancy and research firm, ai³, to conduct a study on the impact of the Total Solar Reflectance (TSR) value on the users comfort and the energy performance of buildings. TSR is the fraction of solar energy that is reflected by a coated surface. The study covered the observation of simulation buildings, where heat reflective coatings were used on opaque parts of the facade, across five key cities Istanbul, Bangkok, Doha, Shanghai and Sydney. Two types of window systems were observed during the process: the non-insulated and the highly insulated type, which is generally used in cold climate locations. The observations made in Doha, which represented the Middle East aspect of the study, were conducted on a residential building model containing 80 apartments and 20 floors with the building orientation towards the south.
