David Betts owner of the business said " Our company will start shipping our new kit on March 1, 2014 at high noon.
The Maine Company is the first in the U.S. to offer 'pot' growing kits. A new page (page 5) at their website states they will only sell to those 21 years or older with mailing addresses in Colorado, Washington State, or in the city of Portland, Maine where marijuana is legal.
Bets said," Seven states have votes coming up for legalization and national voter polls show 58% support the legalization of marijuana, the times are changing and we are going to capitalize on these new opportunities."
Legal in Portland, Maine but not in Bucksport, Maine, gray areas abound. "We are going full steam ahead and we'll meet any legal challenges that may arise with our team of three lawyers and a throng of supporters."
David Betts was born in Rockaway, N.j. and has lived in Seal Beach, California before moving to Maine 30 years ago.
Twenty five years ago he realized he was an "aging house painter who needed a new gig fast." So he took a college level marketing course and conceived, then created the Grow A Tree (tree growing kit) business before the class had ended. It was an instant hit. After a couple of years Betts introduced Grow An Herb! (herb growing kits). The business was kept intentionally small, but after the death of his wife Sharyn to pancreatic cancer, he decided to try and fill the void by expanding production and distribution. As the company grows so does the product line..
