The industrial growth and the infrastructure boom in India has vitalized several industries such as steel, cement and electricity. The electricity vertical has been especially invigorated, with utilities adding capacities to their plant to close the gap between demand and supply. These developments across verticals have fueled demand for air pollution control equipment (APCE) in India.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (environmental.frost.com), Analysis of the Indian Air Pollution Control Equipment Market, finds that the market earned revenues of over INR 22.20 billion in 2012 and estimates this to reach INR 43.18 billion in 2017, at a compound annual growth rate of 14.2 percent. The segments covered include electrostatic precipitators (ESP), bag filters (BF), and wet scrubbers and flue gas de-sulphurization (FGD).

India is highly dependent on coal for power generation, but the burning of coal releases carbon dioxide, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. Around 70 percent of the coal produced in India is utilized for power generation, making the power segment the main air polluter in India.

The power industry has conventionally used high-efficiency ESP to control particulate matter and dispersed gaseous emissions through tall stacks. Currently, bag filters and ESPs are the commonly used equipment to safeguard the environment from particulate matter. FGD is not as popular in India since it is not required for the low-sulfur Indian coal. Although the power segment accounts for 65 percent of the market, the cement, ferrous and non-ferrous segments also have substantial presence in the end-user pie. APCE not only enables users, especially cement plants, comply with emission standards but also aids by-products recovery and reuse within the process for higher levels of production efficiency.

"The market is driven by regulations," said Frost & Sullivan’s Environment & Building Technologies analyst. "Revision of the ambient air quality standard has catalyzed demand for APCE equipment, creating a vibrant market where both national and international players compete for the market share."

Air pollution control norms and standards, which are implemented by the Central and State Pollution Control Board (CPCB/SPCB), mandate the installation of APCE in all industry segments. The FGD segment will particularly benefit from the strict regulations for sulfur oxides (SOx) emission. The APCE market will also experience a rise in retrofit demand from the power and cement sectors, with many ESPs that were installed 20 to 25 years ago needing upgrades to comply with the new regulations. This creates opportunities for hybrid filters, which are a combination of ESP and bag filters.

"Investments in key end-user sectors and effective implementation of emission standards could boost the demand for pollution control equipment," noted the analyst. "Today, end users demonstrate greater awareness about the nature of pollutants before choosing the pollution control equipment; this awareness is anticipated to create a technologically advanced market for air pollution control."
