The World War II Memorial app launched this week, the first mobile app of its kind for tourists on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Created to enhance the experience of visitors to the Memorial grounds, the app provides details on the history of World War II and insights on the meaning behind many aspects of the Memorial. It offers visitors a unique learning experience, including a self-guided tour, a scavenger hunt, an infographic about the Memorial, stories representing the contributions of America’s Greatest Generation to the war effort, and an historical timeline of the conflict.
Starting today, the 25 million annual visitors to the National Mall will be able to explore the history that led up to creation of the Memorial, connecting their current location with the events of World War II. With the White House, Capitol building and Washington Monument all nearby, the app helps visitors imagine what was at stake during the critical years of the Second World War. Visitors can use the app to navigate the Memorial’s rich symbolism reflecting key events of the war and its broad impact on American society.
The app was commissioned by the Trust for the National Mall, the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service. Dedicated to restoring and improving the National Mall, the Trust for the National Mall collaborated with the National Park Service and the Friends of the World War II Memorial to help visitors better appreciate the meaning and significance of the Memorial. The app was made possible with funding support from The Altria Group and the Dr. Scholl Foundation.
Team Carousel30 was awarded the creation of the app by the Trust for the National Mall in July 2013. As team leader, Carousel30, a digital agency based in Washington, DC, provided the strategic direction, user experience and graphic design for the app. Other team members included History Associates, who developed the app content and imagery; Brightline Interactive, who provided the experiential strategy; and Element 84 who developed both the Android and iOS applications.
“We were honored to work on a project that is so important to the fabric of our country,” said Carousel30 Chief Strategy Officer Greg Kihlström. “We’ve worked with the Trust for the National Mall for over six years, and this shows just how far they come as an organization. They’re truly doing some amazing work for the National Mall, and I’m pleased we’re a part of that.”
“Team Carousel30 was an easy choice as our digital agency on this project,” stated Caroline Cunningham, president of the Trust for the National Mall. “Greg and his team bring years of experience in the industry and with the Trust. This mobile app shows not only how civics education can be interactive and engaging, but also how well the National Park Service understands what it takes to engage students and families in a digital era.”
The World War II Memorial App is the first component of the Trust for the National Mall's 21st Century Learning Initiative, which will eventually build a suite of digital educational experiences on the National Mall.
The app is available for download on iOS and Android devices. The World War II Memorial is located on 17th Street SW, along the National Mall.
