In the initial stage, WRE has foreseen to focus on three wind energy projects for which Lahmeyer International is carrying out engineering services as well as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project development.
The first wind farm located close to the city Dongola in Northern Sudan with a foreseen capacity of 100 MW has now been successfully registered by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as the first CDM project activity in Sudan. The wind farm will reduce some 92,000 tonnes of CO2 annually by displacing conventional thermal power generation in the country. Besides the climate-friendly power generation with zero greenhouse gas emissions, the project also contributes to reliable power supply in the region while setting a high value on sustainable environmental protection and social benefits.
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) allows co-financing of emission reduction projects in developing countries. CO2 certificates generated by the CDM can be traded and sold to industrialised countries to help meet emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol. With more than 7,000 registered projects in 87 developing countries, the CDM has proven to be a powerful mechanism to deliver finance for emission reduction projects.
The successful registration of the wind farm in Dongola thus represents a seal of quality for both the services executed by Lahmeyer International and the project developed by the Ministry of Water Resources and Electricity.
