Glenn Miller was semi-finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize 2013, and a finalist in the Glover Art Prize 2012.
He was born in country Queensland and spent his formative childhood years on a grazing property, where he developed an early fascination for nature. He began his art studies under Frank de Silva at the Royal Queensland Art Society in 1980. His much admired mentor shared and encouraged his passion for the landscape. He later attended the Queensland College of Art, with the acclaimed colourist, John Rigby, being among his tutors.
On leaving art college, he worked for many years as a graphic artist in the printing industry. He was a supporter of and did volunteer illustration and graphic design for the Australian Antarctic Protection Society.
He won the Bundaberg City Council Art Award in 1988 and 1993. His controversial 'Girl on the Beach' made the front page of the Bundaberg News Mail the day after being given the 1988 award and is now held in the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery.
In 1994, he met the New York artist and gallery director, Tim Slowinski, who arranged his first solo exhibition and spoke highly of the works by the first Australian artist to be featured at his Manhattan gallery.
In Glenn's words: "My method is to start with sketches and photographs that I have digitally altered, often creating several versions of the same image for reference. I paint the surroundings I am familiar with in a style that is free, expressive and intuitive. Then I explore the dynamics of the landscape itself and - through the manipulation of colours - establish a link between the landscape's reality and that of my imagination. I think of my works as 'colourscapes' ... paintings that are charged with an emotional vision of the world."
With his fluid, expressionistic style and Gauginesque colour-palette, the results are quite enchanting.
